Two roads diverged in a yellow wood – well I guess this is very much a green wood, in typical Irish fashion..after July rain.
But when I was out walking with the kids today, it reminded me of that poem The Road Less Travelled by Robert Frost. It’s an absolute favourite of mine.
I got to thinking that life is made up of so many turns and choices. What happens if if you take one turn instead of another?
- What if we went after one target market and not another?
- What if we set up this business instead of another?
- What if we chose to use one marketing channel and not another?
Look, at the end of the day, it is impossible to know what might have happened if one turn was taken versus another….but what I can tell you is that if you want to experience fast action and achieve marketing momentum in your business life, following these 3 tips will help you do so.
1. Get clear on your message
A confused mind never buys – you’ve heard me say it a thousand times. What I’ve also discovered when I’m working with clients on messaging is that if they are not clear, then they aren’t selling.
And it’s not the ability to tell your business in 60 seconds or less, or your USP – it’s way more than that.
You need to be very clear on why someone will buy from you rather than someone else, you need to know you can help them and how your product or service will make a difference in their lives.
When you re-read that last sentence, it sounds so simple, doesn’t it? But getting it right involves a load of variables, like your differentiation points, your positioning and what I call, your YOU Factor.
2. Get Moving….Faster
Here’s a secret that only my clients know – I often get dressed in my gym gear or running gear first thing in the morning so that I’ve no other choice but to get out to the gym or go running. It’s just a question of when not if.
So I’m not always in high heels!!
But the key to success is moving. Do some marketing every week definitely and every day if you can.
Then do some more. Success loves speed. The consistency of marketing has a momentum effect – keep going, the more you do, the easier marketing becomes.
If you don’t agree, then think how much energy it takes to start a car….or how much energy you need to start when you’re either running, cycling or even walking and you stop mid way on a hill!
As my running buddies always say – keep ‘er lit.
3. Surround yourself with Raving Fans
Surround yourself with people – whether it’s clients, networks, family members who cheer you on and support you.
I help business owners to build a community of raving fans around them because I’m a massive believer in keeping the clients that you have, those that you’ve spent time and money acquiring.
Having your own raving fans as clients around you is best feeling but if you’re just starting out or you’ve always been looking at the transaction rather than the life time value, then it’s not too late.
Choose to focus on the lifetime value and not the transaction – that will make a massive difference to your business, your bottom line, your energy levels in your business. It will also help you with point no. 2 above – keep moving faster.
And how do you create a community of raving fans?
Well it starts with Point no. 1 – Be very clear on your marketing message.
Robert Frost took the road less travelled and knew that it was unlikely he’d ever come back to the other road in his yellow wood.
